One Reciprocity, Two Reciprocity

One Reciprocity, Two Reciprocity

A parody poem I wrote to capture my complicated feelings about the reciprocity literature.

One reciprocity
Two reciprocity
Me reciprocity
You reciprocity

Red reciprocity
Blue reciprocity
False reciprocity
True reciprocity

One reciprocity, Two reciprocity
by Athena Aktipis

One reciprocity
Two reciprocity
Me reciprocity
You reciprocity

Red reciprocity
Blue reciprocity
False reciprocity
True reciprocity

This reciprocity
That reciprocity
Chimp reciprocity
Bat reciprocity

Short reciprocity
Long reciprocity
Weak reciprocity
Strong reciprocity

Pseudoreciprocity
Actual reciprocity
Fictional reciprocity
Factual reciprocity

Positive or negative,
Weak or strong,
Generalized or balanced,
Right or wrong,
Reciprocity is reciprocity,
That’s what I was taught.
Reciprocity is reciprocity,
Or perhaps it is not

Because he gave to him
And he gave to me
Then I gave to her
Albeit indirectly

And then she told her mom
And her mom told her dad
And her dad told my friend
That I wasn’t so bad

But I couldn’t keep track
Of who gave what to whom
And what I owed to him
Or who I should groom

So I gave up that task
And decided to give
To my friends when in need
So we all might just live

But, what should I call this new philosophy?
Maybe non-conditional reciprocity?
Or perhaps just to be consistent
And to take the path least resistant
I should avoid the definitional animosity
And just call it non-reciprocal reciprocity
